I read an interesting article on the Fox news channel website.

The article was about teh build up of pollutants in modern homes.

The problem stems from our homes being better sealed up against the cold. We just don’t allow air to circulate and this can mean the perfect conditions for bacteria to build up. The article states that the concentration of some pollutants can be 2 to 5 times higher inside your home than they are outside.

Particular areas of concern are;

The door mat. How often do you clean yours? A good doormat will serve you well by removing dirt before it is walked through your home. Choose an abrasive door mat and it will remove more of the dust dirt and bacteria that we regularly bring into our homes. At least weekly beat teh mat outdoors to remove excess dirt then use a strong vacuum cleaner to suck out the debris. Finish by blasting it with high temperature steam to kill any lingering bacteria
Dish clothes and towels that are left damp can be breeding grounds for bacteria. Wash at high temperature regularly and give them a blast of steam while you are cleaning surfaces
Your sinks faucet handles can be great places for bacteria to hide. There are cracks around the handle and where the faucet is plumbed in. Blast some steam around the bottom of the faucet and watch the dirt run out. Yuck!

You will need a steamer with a fine nozzle or attachment. A hand held model will probably be the easiest to use but you could do it with a multi-function machine.

As always you will want to be able to steam at high temperatures of above 200 degree C. This will ensure that you kill all bacteria in a single pass. It will also make removal of soap scum and grease easier.

You will really need to adjust the steam flow and pressure as using a fine detail attachment will mean that you need a lower volume of steam. Too much steam will just make seeing the job difficult.

For close up work you should use protective gloves. This steam is hot and will penetrate easily causing a nasty burn or scald in seconds. use protection.

Work steadily across the tiles and along the grout. The steam should push dirt away from the surface and it can then be wiped away with a clean dry rag.

If you find the grout is still discoloured after steaming unfortunately the discoloration will be in the grout. the good news is that you have killed all bacteria around the area. Fill your machine to the recommended level and plug it in. Allow time for the machine to reach its full temperature. A good machine should heat up in around 2 minutes. You can use a multi-function machine or a hand held steamer
Choose the appropriate attachment to your machine. Consult your machines handbook
Start at the top of the drapes and hold the machine directly onto the fabric. You may need to make several passes. Start at one edge and work towards the other side overlapping passes.
Repeat the process on the other side of the drape. You will see the steam penetrating the material and you will also probably see the creases begin to drop out.
If you notice strong smells in the evaporating steam this is an indication that your curtains are being freshened. It will help if you choose a bright, warm day and steam with your windows open. This will help remove the humidity from your room.
Once you have completed the steaming of the drapes. Turn the machine off and allow it to cool before emptying any remaining water.

The key thing to remember is you must look for the performance. Check out;

Steam temperature. It is vital if you want to sanitize. Look for steam in the region of 200 degrees. Remember some of the highly advertised brands work at temperatures barely over 100 degrees
You want a good steam pressure
Variable steam production is useful
A long cable means you don’t have to keep stopping
A good capacity for water so you don’t have to refill to often
good design to make your steamer easy to handle

Don’t get caught out by heavily advertised models. If you buy a quality machine it should last for years and make your cleaning a breeze.

Buy a piece of TV junk and you will get a nmachine that will probably end up unused at the back of your store gathering dust.

Steam Through Your Spring Clean

It’s that time of year again.

New growth outside. Nature is starting to freshen the world. And it is time to get that freshening bug and start your spring clean – and there is no better time to get into steam cleaning if you are not already using it.

The thing is that we mostly keep our homes fresh. We vacuum clean carpets once or twice a week. We dust and we clean hard surfaces. And for most of the time that is just fine, but once a year most of us get the urge to clean a little deeper. Move stuff out of closets and clean the inside of drawers. How about that crevice that just defies every cleaning cloth.

The advantage of using steam when it comes to spring cleaning your home is that it will reach even where your cloth and mop can’t go, and if you buy a quality machine it will kill bacteria virtually on contact.

I use my steam cleaner just about everywhere that I clean.

My spring cleaning schedule is fairly simple I take one room at a time and clean from the top down

Remove all the clutter. I use three crates, the first for stuff that is to be returned to the room, the second for stuff that should live elswhere and the third for stuff that is going to be reycled, donated to charity or thrown out
Use duster or vaccuum cleaner to remove loose dust and cobwebs. Starting at teh top and finishing by vacuum cleaning the carpet or floor
Start at the top again I blast with steam then wipe. Paying particular attention to the cracks and crevices my cloth or mop can’t get into.

Using steam means I can usually chase the dirt out of any hiding place and into a cloth for removal. Even difficult to deal with marks will come off my paintwork and hard surfaces. I have removed kids crayon marks with ease, as the heat simply melts the wax, grease around my kitchen is dealt with just as easily. I can even chase old stains in the carpet into a cloth. This takes a little care, but I use a small nozzled tool and fairly low steam pressure. I then place a cloth on the far side of the stain and chase the dirt into the cloth. You will actually see the stain move from the carpet into the cloth – I find it almost magical.

The only real problem is with materials that may be too delicate to steam and with some paints that may be cleaned away! Always test for colour fastness and material strength by steaming and rubbing somewhere discrete the first time you use steam. Never steam if you think the heat or humidity might damage the material.

When you get to the bathroom or kitchen you can really start to have some fun. Try directing a jet of steam into teh water outlet pipe – you will probably see steam shoot out of the overflow so be careful you hands are not going to be hit. This is quite fun but it also makes sure that the pipes get degunked and any lurking bacteria is killed.

Work around your tiling and into the joints between worksurfaces and wall. You may be surprised at just how much dirt collects.

Cleaning the oven is never much fun but with steam cleaning you can remove even baked on grease and return your stove to like new condition.

The really great thing is that you are not filling your home with costly and sometimes noxious fumes. Your home will smell naturally fresh, but if you like the home to smell of perfume simply use a little essential oil. You can sprinkle oils such as lavender without any fear of damage. Other essential oils should really be diluted in a carrier oil or how about putting some essential oil ont a dampened sponge and use that to wipe as you steam. This should spread your favourite smells all around the home.

Don’t forget to use your steam cleaner to freshen and deodorise soft furnishings. Again test check a small area then use an attachment that diffuses the steam. You can jet deep into the fabric of your sofa and leave it really deeply fresh.

So lets look at these steam mops and why I think they are the best

The Haan Steam Mop

This hits my number one spot simply because of the very high temperature it works at. Haan are so condident of their machines ability to kill bacteria they even call it a floor sanitizer.

The numbers speaks for itself. This machine heats steam to 212 degrees. That is nearly 100 degrees hotter than the Shark steam mop that is so heavily promoted on infommercials.

In simple terms at 212 degrees the Haan steam mop will kill bacteria on contact. Moving your steam mop ast a steady pace across the floor will clean and sanitize in one sweep.

You will notice on less powerful machines the instructions will state that you will need to make several passes in order to kill germs.

In practical terms this means you cover each part of your floor around 5 times. That basically means the cleaning takes 5 times as long. I don’t know about you but when I am using as steam mop I just want to get the job done so I can move on to other stuff.

Aside from the enhanced germ killing power of the Haan steam mop the high temperatures also mean that dirt is dealt with easily. Grease just dissolves and general grime just wiped away.

This machine has a very fast heat up time and is extremely well designed for easy cleaning.

Hoover Enhanced Clean Steam Mop

Hoover have been fairly clever with their steam mop in that they have designed it with two on board tanks that allow you to clean with a disinfectant.

Although this in some ways loses the point of a steam mop it is a fairly smart way of making cleaning effective and simple without hitting those very high temperatures.

Of course this does mean that you are going to need to buy disinfectants for your steam mop. One of the things I like about cleaning with steam is that you can do an effective job with just water, which cuts down on costs and is much kinder to the environment.

Users report very good results from the Hoover enhanced clean steam mop, and this does give the flexibility of cleaning with or without detergents.

I would say that this machine is well worth considering, particularly if you like to leave your home with the smell that is produced by using disinfectant solutions.

Bissell Steam Mop

I hesitated for a while about whether to include the Bissell Steam Mop. Search as I did I was not able to find details of its operating temperature.

However it is here because of the very high customer ratings and reviews. If the customer likes the steam mop then Bissell must be doing something right.

This is also a well designed steam mop that is easy to move about and will get into every corner.

I have noticed the customer recommendation to move the mop very slowly which suggests to me that the temperature may not be as high as it could, but a customer reviewer suggests that by moving slowly one pass is enough to get her floor really clean. This is better than having to effectively mop the whole floor several times, but I think I still favour the Haan steam mop as teh high temperatures mean I can move at a steady pace and still feel confident that my floor is clean.

Which Steam Mop?

Overall I will stick with my Haan steam mop, but all three of these machines seem capable of doing a fair job. As I said at the start temperature is the key factor for me. I like to know that bacteria is given a really hard time and 212 degrees is really going to kick them into touch.

Steps to a Clean Oven – steam clean your oven for fresh, sparkling results

Cleaning the oven is not most people’s favourite job. The combination of heat, grease and food debris make it challenging to say the least.

But with the application of a little kitchen science the job doesn’t have to be that difficult.

Firstly consider the properties of grease. Grease softens and thins as it warms so it makes sense to use heat to remove the grease. A steam cleaner is ideal for this. Grease also dissolves in acidic solutions so we will use vinegar to help the cleaning process.
Here are my steps to a clean oven

1. Gather together the equipment and products you need

· Steam Cleaning Machine

· Soft Cloths

· Brass Brush attachment or separate scrubber

· Cleaning Gloves

· Vacuum cleaner or dustpan

· White (distilled) vinegar

2. Remove the racks from the oven and put them in a sink covered with a 50:50 solution of vinegar and hot water

3. Remove loose debris from the oven using a vacuum or dust pan and brush

4. Steam small sections of the oven using a scouring brush attachment or separate brush to loosen burnt on grime. Wipe regularly to remove loosened dirt. Be very careful at this stage as you are using super heated steam in a confined space. Always wear protective gloves

5. Use a steam squeegee attachment to clean the inside of the oven door

6. With a small detail nozzle steam the metal parts of the door, then move to the top of the stove and use the small nozzle to jet dirt away from the hob. You will be able to chase dirt from joints and into a cleaning cloth

7. The soaking racks should be much easier to clean as the hot water vinegar solution will have loosened the grease. You should be able to wipe them to a sparkle with a wire scourer and a little effort. Stubborn spots could be treated to a blast of steam.
